Independent Admissions Guidance is a higher education consultancy set up by Dan Shaffer.
I have over 25 years' experience in higher education professional services, specialising in admissions, across a range of institutional and national platforms. Prior to setting up my own independent consultancy, I was Head of Professionalism in Admissions for SPA (Supporting Professionalism in Admissions), the leading source of support on fair admissions and good practice in the UK.
Prior to joining SPA, I was Assistant Registrar at Aston University, responsible for admissions, enrolment, examinations and teaching facilities. I initially developed my career in admissions across a range of roles at the University of Central England (now BCU), and additionally worked as a part-time visiting lecturer in Psychology alongside my admissions duties. I was responsible in both institutions for developing policy and good practice in higher education recruitment and welfare activities, as well as gaining practical knowledge of the student experience beyond admissions and contributing to national discussions on good practice.
I have sat on many sector body committees in both my institutional and SPA roles, advising on and developing national policy, curriculum and quality assurance initiatives. I have visited, reviewed and guided hundreds of universities and colleges across the UK. This insight, coupled with my practical experience, gives me a wide-ranging and unique know ledge-base to help providers of higher education and those advising their potential students.
I take an ethical lens to recruitment and admissions, helping secure an institution's repution through the quantity, quality and equality of its student intake.
